“Don’t be silly!” she exclaimed, tightening her own grip on his fingers. “There was nothing you could’ve done! You would’ve gotten yourself killed for nothing!”
Plainly he had considered this possibility. “I would’ve gladly died that day if I could’ve saved you, ’Bekah.”
Her heart ached for his pain and for all the futile suffering and regret. “Oh, Andrew,” she whispered.
“Did they hurt you?” he asked, his voice ragged with grief. “Oh, God, the nights I’ve laid awake imagining —”
“No!” she told him fiercely. “I’m fine! Can’t you see? Can’t you tell? I’m fine. They didn’t hurt me at all!” she lied.
He pulled her hands to his face and pressed his lips first to one and then the other. When he looked up again, his eyes were wet with unshed tears. “I’m so glad you’re back,” he breathed.
Then, seeing the consent in her eyes, he took her in his arms, cradling her to him as if she were a precious treasure for which he had been searching his entire life. She lay against his chest, overwhelmed by memories of the life they’d known before, of the happiness they might have shared, of everything now lost to them.
A sob shook him, and she whispered, “It’s all right, Andrew,” and patted his shoulder. Sadly, she realized she always seemed to be comforting her loved ones when it was they who should have been comforting her.
For a second she thought she might weep, too, but she heard a growled profanity, and Andrew quickly pushed her away.
“Hope I’m not interrupting anything,” MacDougal snarled.
Poor Andrew jumped up from the bench and turned his back, obviously afraid MacDougal would see he had been crying, and Rebekah jumped up, too, compelled to defend him from humiliation.
“What do you want?” she demanded, planting her hands on her hips.
Sean glared down at her. “Jewel sent me to find you. She says it’s dinnertime.”
“I just had breakfast,” Rebekah scoffed, and Sean resisted an urge to shake her. What in the hell did she think she was doing, sneaking off with another man the minute his back was turned?
“Not everybody sleeps half the day. It’s nearly noon for the rest of us,” he informed her.
The color came to her beautiful cheeks, but she refused to back down. “Fine. We’ll be along in a minute.”
As if he’d leave her alone with her long-lost lover another minute! He was just about to remind her to whom she now belonged when Nelson said, “I think I’ll go wash up.”
Sean watched him go through narrowed eyes, noticing the boy was careful not to face him. Probably afraid Sean would see the bulge in his pants. Damn him to hell.
“I think I’ll go wash up, too,” she said and would have walked away, but he grabbed her shoulders and held her in place.
“Not so fast,” he said and took some satisfaction in the fury that sparked in her lovely blue eyes. The sun was shining on her silken hair, turning it to pure gold, and he longed to touch it and to press her face to his and taste those luscious lips.
